Maybe all those ABs who rushed to defend the Social Workers when I asked in Feb. whether SWs were
naive or incompetent , would now like to defend them again . A father made his 2 daughters pregnant on 18 occassions . The SWs and the pollce were repeatedly told what was happening but failed to take action . The girls' brother reported it in 1997, and several hundred SWs have been involved . What do you call it , if its not incompetence ?

modeller- "but if they fail the very people they are supposed to be protecting then something is radically wrong. "

Totally agree. So what's the solution then?

ummmmm You are right like all jobs overtime may be required . It is paid at time and a half.

Clever B00 ! You are still trying to change the basic question . This board of enquiry and previous boards of enquiry have made several hundred recommendations. I would like to see them implemented and failure to do so should result in a few heads rolling . I'm not referring to the rank and file I think management are at fault . With regards to recruitment I feel that should be more selective. Having a caring nature is no substitute for common sense. I have dealt with parents and children for over 20 years and I could tell within minutes if someone was lying but I've had colleagues who were being manipulated and they just couldn't , or wouldn't see it. That's where management should do the job they are paid for as was pointed out the enquiry.
what line of work are you in? what did you do about the people who you felt were lying? and what was the result?
Social workers would be salaried and not on time and a half!
ok, i'll stop being mean now ;-)

I do actually agree with you in this instance modeller. where those two girls are concerned the SW's failed spectacularly didn't they?

I wonder how much blame can be given to the fact that SW's are given an enormous load of paperwork to do, and spend way too much time actually doing this and negotiating red tape, that they've no longer got the time to do the most important thing- connecting with each other, by talking about specific cases- you know, putting 2 and 2 together and actually getting to 4.

The media obviously hasn't got time to report on all the 'competent' Social workers.

As Jack said..67 times they moved. How were SS suppose to keep up?

poodicat If you go on Google you will see some councils advertising £24K--£30K plus time and a half for overtime .

Steve.5 If you employed a plumber and he left your kitchen flooded , who would you blame , the mikman ? Hundreds of SWs have failed in their jobs . They are not convenient scapegoats they have been blaimed for failing in their jobs . Who would you blame then ?
Question Author
ummmm They didn't need to keep up , 27 authorities have admitted knowing about the accusations and failed to take any action on each occasion. As was stated at the board of enquiry this crime could have been stopped many many times . Its been going on for 35 years.
you please respond to my last post? thank you.
and plumbers don't have to work around the Human Rights Act.

vastly different.

sara It was in teaching which included deprived families and Gypsies and I would tell them straight " I don't believe you . I'm not interested in excuses all I want is ..etc....."
In most cases you would get at the truth. In a few cases it would go further , but the important thing was they knew I was not being hoodwinked and that is a part of the problem with many ,not all, SWs, because they have a caring nature and they expect the best in people, they can be manipulated.
I just think their hands are often tied. they can't take kids from a potentially safe home, and they can't leave them in a potentially unsafe home. they get sued left, right and centre, threatened and sometimes physically attacked. it's probably the most stressful job you could have.

if you were in teaching, you would know there are long-winded and often ridiculous procedures to go through to try to get something sorted out.
67 times in 35 years = app twice a year. So when SS find them again they move. It's not rocket science.
Question Author
sara I forgot to mention I also had dealings with SWs and I found they had great empathy with their clients. Which in my opinion tended to cloud their judgements.
If your daughter has down to earth common sense plus a caring nature she could make an excellent SW but if she lacks the former she will have many heartaches. You have to be tough to be a good SW. I wish her luck.
