depends i suppose on his age and interests. if he drinks, perhaps a bottle of his favourite tipple and a nice thank you card? (or is that a bit too girly?!)

I think the wine and / or cheese is a nice thought.

Otherwise, what about a good book - something involving friendship will be good.

I reccomend 'Hi Fidelity' by Nick Hornby, and then you can write a nice inscription in the flyleaf, and date it, so he will remember you and the time he was there for you.

how about taking him and his wife out for a thank you meal one evening?
or maybe booking a table and paying for a meal for just the two of them?
whatever you choose to do or give him, im sure he will really appreciate it and will be happy that hes been there for you.

Male friend who has been a rock and youhave never met his wife? Uh-oh, be very careful. Somebody could well get hold of the wrong end ot the stick.

Just keep it very low key, or you may end up with more trouble for him!
