Dog Peeing

I have two dogs, 1 Jack Russelll aged 2 years and a Corgi cross rescued dog which we guess is approx 4 years. Every day the room where they sleep and stay during the day is covered in wee. Sometimes one or the other poo but mostly wee. I am getting increasingly fed up of cleaning up after them. They are kept inside during the day while I work but are let out as soon as I come home. They also wee quite a lot during the night, which I am surprised at as they are both walked for 30 - 40 minutes before bed. Any ideas how to stop this happening please ?

You really should not have dogs and go out to work. I got mine when I retired. They get bored and lonely. I have to let my dog out all the time to wee - and it is very hard work up and down up and down.

How long are you leaving them when you go to work? I disagree Connemmara, the Rescues would be full of dogs if the only people that owned them were retired. I dont think mine get bored and lonely, cant say I have asked them though! But they are walked before I go to work and when I get back and we always spend quality time with them on an evening playing football.

as they are rescue dogs maybe the centre you got them from didn't know - or chose not to tell you - their history. It's likely they have never been housetrained and with you out all day it's going to be very difficult to teach them. Am really surprised a rescue centre rehomed unhousetrained dogs to someone out at work all day.

the rescue centre I got from mine never asked any questions also they told me they would give me a house visit to see if my house was okay for the dog - am still waiting 6 years later. Jules 77 is right too they probably weren't housetrained as my own wasn't trained either because for a year he kept going to the toilet inside - I figured my dog (he was a stray) wherever he lived before was an outside dog therefore he could pee and poo whenever he liked so your dogs do need to be housetrained and as I say good luck cos it is very hard work.

Just to give you some help here, if they are not peeing whilst you are around then they understand they are not to pee in the house. The area where they pee now will smell of wee and they will think it is ok to keep on peeing in the same spot (do not use ammonia or bleach to clean as this has the same smells as urine) You should only tell them off if you catch them in the act. So I would invest some time in that room with them and await the pee! Once they pee, tell the dog off sternly, place it outside and leave for 10 minutes. Allow the dog back in. Every time the dog pees outside - give it the best praise you can. It is back to basics and will take time but whatever you do - dont tell them off when you find a pee withiut catching them in the act as they wont put 2 & 2 together so will just think you come home and tell them off for being there.

Even though they are not pups you could try using a crate. I'd never used them before for my previous dogs but my sister swears by them. I decided to give it a try with my new pup last year and have never looked back. Marley (kids choice of name!!) is shut in his crate at night and has been from 10wks old and has NEVER soiled in it - they tend not to because it is their own area. He also goes in it if everyone is out. It means that when you do let your dogs out they will almost definitely need to pee and you have a golden opp for praise every time. I was really worried that he'd hate it but apart from a few nights of crying at the start he's been fine. It's open all the rest of the time and he often goes in there to sleep or play with toys - so he doesn't mind it too much! Good luck

Maybe you should put on some music or turn on the TV for them before going off to work.
