With regards to an MOT am i right in thinking that the garage carry out the test and if anything needs replacing eg wiper blades do they then have to replace the blades or do they inform the cars owner eg me that the blades need replacing

Maybe its my fault then as i asked the person if it would be a good idea to have my mobile number put onto they're records so they could call me if anything needed replacing but they didnt call me and they replaced a wiper blade at £15, i cant complain really as its saved me the bother of buying 1 and fitting it. Think i ought to say in future to not replace anything unless i say so.
At my last MOT, I checked my wipers – the rubbers were a bit weak, but had not split. To ensure that I was not charged £20 for new wipers, I fitted a new pair from my £ shop.
Many many years ago a colleague was charged less than a pound for two new side-lights required to pass his MOT. On hearing, this he asked for an additional half dozen spare bulbs (at this price). Unbeknown to the garage, the headlight units were sealed beams with integral side lights. Once a bulb blew, you had to replace the whole unit. Needles to say the garage scratched the cost of his new side-lights.
