A Canadian friend is adamant that it's easy to tell Canadians and Americans apart from their speech. Frankly I can't tell the difference. Is there any?

I am an American with a Canadian flatmate and I can definitely hear it, as can most people we know. The biggest cliche of Canadian accents is the pronounciation of the phrase "out and about" they say "oat and aboat" and we say "owt and abowt" - or something like that!
There is a definite difference in accents, which you can hear in the speech patterns of Canadians like Donald Sutherland, it's different from an American accent. In what way? It's impossible to describe, I just know the difference when I hear it!
