Hi -
I am a full time student, all i get is the government bursary; i have no other income. (believe me, im job hunting like crazy) But anyway, i really want to propose to my girlfriend; we have been talking about it for ages, the problem is, i cant afford an expensive ring! £100 is like my limit...
I've seen a nice ring in H Samual for £70, white gold but cubic zerconian stone
Should i wait till i can afford a more expensive ring?
She says that she wouldnt mind if i proposed to her with a gummy ring; but my friends all disagree and say that the ring does matter, i should wait. They also say im proposing too soon to her, because im at uni - i should wait till im finished with uni (3 more years)
Any advice is appreciated
Thanks
Jp
i don't think the cost of a ring is important or where it is bought but feel that it would be nice if it was something she liked and was happy to wear for the rest of her life. I think you can note your intention to marry without actually giving a ring and start making wedding plans!?!? A friend of mine used to work with antique jewellery - everytime something she liked came in she would 'swap' her engagement ring so the ring she wore was not what her fiancee proposed to her with - I did not really like the idea of that. You have obviously discussed proposal with GF that either just go for it if you think that is right or accept between you that the plan is to get married and start preparing for that. Good luck!
I was thinking, the rings around £100 are Cubic Zirconia, but there is a really nice one that has a Blue Topaz stone - but its usually associated with November? Would it still be suitable for an engagement ring?
Well personally, I think it would be fine, but I am not a traditionalist. You must be aware of her taste and I am sure she will love whatever you get her because she loves you. Ahhh :o)
Go for it, the cash value of the ring doesn't matter in the scheme of things, it's the thought that counts and your girlfriend has told you she won't mind.
A word about the blue stone though - you need to ask her, I would before you buy something with a coloured stone, just in case, not everyone likes them or has particular feelings about wearing certain coloured stones. I wish you and your girlfriend a wonderful life together!
some people know the price of everything...and the value of nothing...
personally id be furious if my finace spent loads on an engagement ring - £50 tops...but then im a hippy chick and would want unusual one, silver colour with crystals etc, no diamonds or gold etc
i can think of probably a thousand things i would rather spend that money on...
what about approaching i student jewellery maker? some of them would love the chance to make some thing original and would do it for £100...
I like Joko's idea; yes you could go to a jeweller and tell them a bit about you wanting to engage this person and could only afford £100 on the ring. I'm sure they'll oblige and make you something suitable. And the best part of going to a jeweller is - you'll get a one-of-a-kind ring probably something engraved in it too. Best wishes!
