Barking & Dagenham - immigrants getting preference on social housing
On BBC London News just now, there's been a story concerning the idea (supported by a certain right wing party in Barking & Dagenham) that social housing is predominantly allocated to new immigrant families.
According to a two year independent study, only 2% of the entire housing stock in the past year, have gone to newcomers (in B&D).
This is a story about the report:
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news /queue-jumping-immigrants-are-a-myth-says-stud y-1724453.html
So where did this (supposed) myth come from? Is there substance to it?

They interviewed a Dagenham girl who was complaining about "the Pakistanis coming over here and queue-jumping".
She was a single mum with two kids and a third on the way. She appeared to be no more than 20 years old. Bless her for not seeing the irony...

So all the indiginous people who need a home where housed before any immigrants where housed, so there's not a single local family in Dagenham unhoused? Well I'm impressed! Perlease!
Tell me why foriegn immigrants should be housed before the girl in your example. She may have got the figures wrong, she may be a little slapper who needs to keep her knees together but she should still be housed before any of the immigrants.

Apparently, D&B council have a policy whereby those in most need are allocated housing fastest.
There are locals (like the girl interviewed last night) who are already have a two bedroomed flat and choose to breed her way up to a larger property by having more kids.
I would rather see a hard-working immigrant family get a house than a human baby factory who has never worked and is unlikely to in the next decade.

My parents live in Barking and there is a large immigrant population in Barking & Dagenham now. There used to be a points system for council housing, but that has all gone out of the window now. Immigrants DO get priority over residents already in the borough.
A few years ago,a large number of immigrants were moved out of London and placed in housing in Barking.

I am born and bred in Dagenham and have seen a very large influx of immigrants to this borough.People keep defending the borough council in their so called unbiased and fair housing allocation system, but its a farce. This is because the coucil have a duty to keep open 2% of council housing for immigration and emergency housing. On an estate of around 20,000 houses controlled by the council this is 400 houses. What is not counted is that once these immigrants are housed, the house allocated to them goes OFF the list (for obvious reasons) and another house is kept open to maintain that 2% balance. As time goes on less houses are available for allocation and the houses that were part of the 2% are housed with immigrants. This is all without taking into account all the houses rented by the council from the private sector, that the borough rents on behalf of immigrants. These houses are being rented to people indiginous to the borough also, but the ratio for locals to get housed before others is non existant and thats the unfairness.
