copying a DVD to your hard drive

I have a question that is possible simple to answer for many people.

I was wondering how do I copy a dvd to my hard drive so that it is stored on the computer.?
I have nero and power dvd softwar. Can anyone tell me the easiest way to do this?

get DVD Decrypter (its free):

be quick though, as that program has been banned by UK law enforcement. however, if you're using it to copy your own home-made DVDs its quite legal.

use it in ISO mode and powerDVD can play the file from the hard drive. note that you'll need to be running a hard drive in ntfs mode (i.e. windowsXP win2k or something).

thanks for the reply.  I did what you said but I seem to be having a problem playing the file from my hard drive.  Or maybe I just dont know how to play the file from my hard drive using powerdvd.

Can you suggest anything here?

open the folder named video ts, click on the first file that is around 1,048,000 kb. the video will play for twenty minutes or so and stop. then click on the next file of that approximate size. repeat this after each time it stops.

I cant see the file video ts. I have five files one called:-

DEFAULTPAL_SCN.ISO which I think is the file I need to play because it is 3,944,588 kb and the others a small i.e 5kB

there is also another file when you click it a window pops up to say that windows cannot open the file and that I have the option to select a program from the  list or go online to find the appropriate programme.

any ideas peanut?

if you let dvd decrypter put it where it wanted to, it should be in a folder with the name of the video. in that folder should be the video ts. and yes some of the smaller files are not meant to be played and that is why windows cannot open them.

I checked where the file had been sent by Dvd decyrpter and it is H:\DEFAULTPAL_SCN.ISO

there was no folder as such.  Just this file name along with three other files.

does this make sense?

Hi peanut I just noticed that when you try to open the file from the HDD within powerdvd it automatically selects a .IFO file ext as the file type.

In the dvd decypter you can select your mode either choosing the .ISO or .IFO mode.  I chose the .ISO last time maybe I should change this to .IFO and rip the dvd to my HDD again.

What do you think?

my files are listed as ifo files, so go ahead and try changing that. also dont try to open the file from within power dvd, find the file on your hard drive and click on it.

when you open dvd decrypter and look at the destination mine says for example ( E:\FAST_AND_THE_FURIOUS\VIDEO_TS\ )

on your dvd decrypter click on mode on the top and select file.

only certain files are listed as ifo so dont select that just choose file like my previous post indicates

its alright that file DEFAULTPAL_SCN.ISO was correct.   I just ended up using a different media player to play the file and it worked.  It must have been something to do with the ext.  . ISO  I maybe should have used .IFO.  ill know again when trying to play a file through powerdvd.

I only used .ISO because it was recommend by Fo3nix above

sorry i couldnt remember which one it was that powerDVD understood, so took a gamble and told you ISO ;)

its certainly a format that many other players will understand.
