There was a bit in our local paper today about this and it says if your 60th birthday falls between 6 April 2010 and 5th April 2015 you should check on www. freedompass. org to find out when you are eligible for free travel. It would seem from that site that if your birthday is before 5th August 2010 you will be eligible from 6th November 2010, however any later than...

Free bus local travel is available to those who've reached the state pension age for women. (That applies irrespective of whether the person is actually male or female).
As your question appears to recognise, the state pension age for women starts to rise from this April. However it's a gradual process. A person born on 1st August 1950 reaches the woman's state retirement age on 6th November this year. Someone born on 31st August 1950 reaches that age on 6th January next year. See here:

If you live in Northern Ireland you can get your bus pass at age 60, which makes you eligible for free public travel within Northern Ireland. At age 65 you are eligible for free travel throughout the island of Ireland on public transport. For info, free First Class travel is not a feature of the free travel scheme for either age group.
