Sam the labrador had an operation on his back late Oct 09 to remove a non malignant lump. Even though the lump was not very big, the vet had to shave Sams fur off an area of about 16 inches by 14 inches, nearly all of his back in other words. I got him a coat for winter but he only wore it when I took him out as he didnt like it and kept taking it off. Now nearly 3 months later there is very little sign of his fur growing back, he still looks like a shawn sheep. Does anyone know how long it will be before Sam will be back to his glorious best? He has always had a very thick coat as the rest of him shows.

he may actually not grow it back properly until the weather changes and he gets his summer coat I am afraid...has he got any fur at all or is it still bare skin?

still bare skin
Max, my long haired GSD had a similar operation early last year, his coat soon grew back but even now it is not "right" as wolfgang says i'm hoping it will get back to normal when his winter coat grows out. I would have thought fhat after 3 months there would be some new growth.
what does the vet say?
You could try a feed additive called Yumega which helps coat growth. You can order it online or get it some places like Pets at Home. You only need a tiny amount a day, about a teaspoon for a Lab.

Hi Woofgang, have not returned to the vet since Dec when the vet said not to worry it would grow back. Its just the time it is taking that I wasn't sure was normal, but as you mentioned before, it may suddenly get going as he is sort of in between moults

Lankeela many thanks for your answer and the useful web site. I intend to get some of this from Pets at Home, worth a try. It cannot do any harm after all, small price to pay to see Sam back to normal. Thanks again

Hi Paddywak, I do hope your dog is doing better now. As Woofgang said maybe they have finished their winter moulting and waiting for their new summer coats. I am going to try Lankeela's recommendation and see how that works. Thanks, bye.
I can recommend Yumega also. And you could also try Quistel spray lotion.

Thanks Jules, only just seen your answer. I have bought some Yumega so Sam is now on the bottle! We will see how he gets on, foxyferret

It is now March and still hardly any fur on Sam even after Yumega treatment. The vet said yesterday she has never seen anything like it before and it should have grown back after 6 weeks. She thinks it may be hormonal and has suggested a blood test which I am going to book. She didn't sound very confident in her tone that this would give her a correct diagnosis. There has never been any problem before this op. He used to just moult and then regrow as normal. I just wondered if anyone else out there had ever had a dog with a similar problem?
