i want the sunshine in my garden from approx middle of the day, right up till it sets in the evening. not bothered about morning sun, and i guess the late afternoon / evening sun is more important than midday sun. what direction should my garden face please?

At noon the sun is south. So I'd say you'd want the garden facing South West

South would give you longest sun as this is the direction of sun midday (GMT). For sun later head towards south west. Due west would be facing sun at sunset.

I assume you are in northern hemisphere

My window box is west facing. It hardly ever sees the sun. :-(
