A 5 cent coin - a nickel - and a 50 cent coin. (One is not a nickel but the other is!)
There are no 50-cent US coins! (anymore)

Oh yes there are. The current version has had the same design since 1964 (JFK).

They're not that common, but there are still 50 cent coins in the US.  Same with the dollar coins.  They aren't accepted in vending machines, most cash drawers don't have a slot for either of them, yada yada, so they don't get circulated very much.

PS  The usual way I hear this question is "I have two coins totalling 30 cents, one of them is not a nickel.  What are the coins?"  That way, the answer is a quarter and a nickel.

How many times can people write "not legal tender" without offering proof.

31 U.S.C.A. (2004), section 5112, which reads (in part):

(a) The Secretary of the Treasury may mint and issue only the following coins:
(1) a dollar coin that is 1.043 inches in diameter.
(2) a half dollar coin that is 1.205 inches in diameter and weighs 11.34 grams.
(3) a quarter dollar coin that is 0.955 inch in diameter and weights 5.67 grams.
(4) a dime coin that is 0.705 inch in diameter and weighs 2.268 grams.
(5) a 5-cent coin that is 0.835 inch in diameter and weighs 5 grams.
(6) except as provided under subsection (c) of this section, a one-cent coin that is 0.75 inch in diameter and weighs 3.11 grams.
(7) A fifty dollar gold coin that is 32.7 millimeters in diameter, weighs 33.931 grams, and contains one troy ounce of fine gold.
(8) A twenty-five dollar gold coin that is 27.0 millimeters in diameter, weighs 16.966 grams, and contains one-half troy ounce of fine gold.
(9) A ten dollar gold coin that is 22.0 millimeters in diameter, weighs 8.483 grams, and contains one-fourth troy ounce of fine gold.
(10) A five dollar gold coin that is 16.5 millimeters in diameter, weighs 3.393 grams, and contains one-tenth troy ounce of fine gold.

I have just asked my friend who lives in California.

^Fern says:
Do you still have half dollar coins?
coffee says:
yes

I think she would know. (o:
Merchants do accept them, and they must, by law.  Just like $2 bills.  They're not all that common, but they are still legal tender, and are an acceptable form of payment.  (I always make sure when I use one of those dollar coins to point out to the person that it's not a quarter, since they're about the same size.  Just like the 50 cent piece, dollar coins are not widely used, but they still by law must be accepted as valid currency.)
