thankyou for answering. when i extracted the monbretia from a container ( it had been in the container too long and was not flowering ) it was a solid mass of corms, some single but others three and four deep. it was too solid to separate by hand and i was tempted to use a spade. if there's an easier way that you know of, i'd be much obliged

they form chains of corms so you need to split them trying to keep the chains together. The best way is to interlock two garden forks and push them down through the clump and then pull the forks apart to split the roots up. This can be done either now or in the Autumn.
