my jack russel dog puts his head down and snorts through his nose. this coincides with a cough as if he is trying to clear his throat and a runny nose.

Could be what is known as 'reverse sneezing' -if you hold your hand over the dogs nose and run the throat it should stop. Sometimes caused by a soft palate. If you google reverse sneezing you will find some information and some youtube videos that show dogs doing it, so you can see if its the same thing.
Meant to say, I'd get a vet to check that it is not kennel cough, as that sounds as though they have got something stuck in their throat.

the same happens to my dog particularly when she is excited.it doesnt happen in general just when shes very excited.
i just put it down to old age as shes just turned 10.i guess its the same way that older people end up coughing after a good laugh

my dogs done it for ages and it never gets any worse
