Freeview updates

Can any one advise who is responsible for the frequent need to update freeview boxes?
These always seem to occur after setting recorders and result in all settings get scrambled and the programme defaulting to BBC1.Is it possible to select the update times in any way ?

in my two boxes you can turn auto update off and do it manually or select a time for it do auto update, look in settings

I switched mine off ages ago.
