does anyone know a good way to make friends in new york city without having been there before.  i'm going (as most of you know) in october, and i'm going on my own but it'd be nice to have someone to meet up for a coffee with.

Try couchsurfing.com. It's a good way to meet people who are friendly to travelers.

Okcupid.com could be a good bet too - just make sure who you talk to is looking for friendship and nothing more!

also, try www.craigslist.org    and click on New York link. Craigslist is an online phenom. in the States and I've used it to find jobs/flats and others have gotten dates and such. Have fun - New York is cool.
