I dont come from Liverpool but I have to say the Albert dock area is one of the most amazing areas in the UK.

And the Merseyside Maritime Museum (free) in the Albert Dock area is also pretty amazing

Note the Albert dock area (combined with other historic dock areas in Liverpool) are designated a World Heritage Site. Sounds like a good reason for visiting Liverpol to me.
How many World Heritage sites have you visited?

Note we only have 28 World Heritage Sites in the UK (some are abroad in Bermuda etc) and it is not easy to become a World Heritage Site

joggerjayne - I presume you have never actually been to Liverpool? There is loads to do and see, Speke Hall, Croxteth Hall, the childhood homes of some of the Beatles, Beatles tours (which take you to Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields etc), two beautiful cathedrals, Anfield museum and tour (if you're into football), various museums (including the Maritime museum), Tate Liverpool, plus the new Liverpool One shopping centre. Then you can get the ferry across the Mersey, and even travel slightly further afield to Southport or to the Wirral (Port Sunlight is well worth a visit). For more information look here

If you want to go IN the childhood homes of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, you must pre-book with the National Trust (who own and operate the houses).
The only way is via the NT minibus that departs from Albert Docks or Speke Hall at pre-set times. It is well-worth it - especially to see the punters who came in private taxis and can only gawp from the outside footpath.

Well you will be right in the city centre so shopping, eating and drinking will be all around you! Beatles experience, Magical Mystery Tour, strange amphibious yellow duck bus (never been on it but apparently after driving around for a bit, it then launches into the Albert Dock), Ferry across the Mersey, complete with Gerry Marsden soundtrack (well it was the last time I was on it!) plus all the museums and art galleries.
A bit further afield (short bus ride) you've got Speke Hall, Knowsley Hall, Croxteth Country Park, Sefton Park (and it's glorious Palm House)
I'm sure I've missed loads out - and you're within a couple of hours of North Wales, the Lake District and Yorkshire! Where are you travelling from?

You must go to the Philharmonic pub and go to the Gents toilets. They are absolutely amazing and are a listed monument. Try the Nook pub nearby which is original and unchanged. Chinatown is worth a visit too as is the Hard Days Night Hotel which has amazing memorabilia and is near to Mathew Street and the Cavern Club. So much heritage in Liverpool. Although Mr thug was brought up about 12 miles from Liverpool he'd never been on the ferry or seen the sights so we had, instead of going to Prague or Budapest, a cultural trip to Liverpool in 2006. One of the best trips we've ever done. The people are so friendly and helpful. An early bird meal (before 7pm) at Bistro Pierre in Button Street gets you an excellent 3 course meal for around £10.
The Albert Dock area is great and I loved the Beatles Experience.
The Mathew St festival is great but don't think it's until August Bank holiday weekend.
Other places close by are Formby where there are dunes to walk in by the sea (National Trust park) and red squirrels.
You also have Knowsley Safari Park not too far away.

Enjoy your visit to Liverpool jigman1. What the serious Posters have stated on here is true as it's a great City. If you like Good Pub Meals and Cask Ales there are tons of excellent Pubs to choose from before or after your Museum visits.
