unselect media player classic during the install, it's not required.

To watch a video your media player needs to be able to access the necessary 'codec' for that particular type of recording. Windows Media Player frequently lacks the codecs it needs to display your videos properly. So you need to install them onto your PC.Clicking the 'Download now' link, towards the top of the page supplied by Chuck, will get you a program which, when you run it, will install loads of additional codecs (hopefully including the one you need).
However it might be simpler just to use a decent media player. (Windows Media Player is quite good for playing and organising audio files but pathetic when it comes to video). The most popular alternative to WMP (which is frequently recommended here on AB, on BBC technology programs and in the technical press) is VLC:

GOM is also excellent:

Generally, it is NOT recommended to install codec packs. They bung up the system and alter priorities in registry for different format playbacks.

I learned this some years ago when I started using Zoom Player.
Most formats can be displayed simply by installing FFDShow codec. It is a small multi-format codec that will play all XVid, Divx, MP4, and many others.

For DVD playback in any DirectShow player (like WMP), you will need a splitter, MPEG2 decoder and AC3 filter. You can get there also.
For Real and Quicktime playback, just install the Real Alternative codecs, and the Quicktime alternative, one of them with Classic Media Player. Although not totally necessary CMP has it's own codecs, and can play content that will not play in others. VideoLan's VLC player is the same.

Good advice here, too.
