Did you see Look North tonight. The 98 year old woman who has written a poem about Yorkshire. A composer has been recruited to put it to music, to be sung by a choir for Yorkshire Day on August 1st. The poem was very moving. At least I thought so.

I was born in Mytholmroyd and my grandad on my Mum's side came from a line that I can trace back to the early 1500s in Ripponden and Barkisland, we have Lumbs, Stotts, Normantons, Ainleys and Widdups on that side ,my great great grandfather's stonemasonry firm erected the Ripponden Arches, so I am quite Yorkshire!!
I lived their for some years
I knew a guy here in Ontario who was born in Keighley (sp?). His last name was Hawkridge; is that a common name there?

Hi, Dot, poodi and stewey. Stewey You would be better off asking dot about common Yorkshire names. Dot did you see Look North? Poodi, where do you live now?
Stewey it's a generic placename as regards meaning but originas wise, i would say it's a North Country name, perhaps Cumberland, Westmoreland, and then filtering down the country,
Back in scotland, but lived in mirfield, yeadon, garforth
Hi Caslass I missed the poem.

Dot my cousin is married to a Jack Ainley from Leeds. Me and Mr Ask are from Leeds, we now live in Pudsey.

Stewey I don't know if Hawkridge is common to Yorkshire in particular, but Keighley is not too far from where we live.
If he has an ancestor called Savile Ainley we are related lol
I found it unusual in the fact that he was English and had a surname that over here is typical of Indian names (Native American that is).
