washing machine 'noises'

My Aeg washing machine has recently started making 'noises'. It seems to be coming from the water inlet which starts and stops abruptly which results in a loud bang in the water pipes. Is this a machine fault I can tackle on my own ( DIY competent) or is it serious - or maybe water pressure?

Recently had problems with washing machine noise and problem was due to valve (where machine tubes connect to pipes - I am not very competent!) - deteriorating. I think a new one cost around 10 and was fitted in minutes by a competent DIYer. Of course it may not be same!
You probably forgot to check wether the kids had chucked the cat in the machine.
Seriously, I had a similar problem although with a different brand of machine. Mine was simply due to a buildup of grit in the small filter where the waterhoses connect to the washer's pipes. It was a 5 minute job to remove the hoses from the back and pry out the in-line filter, rinse and replace. Hope your problem is something similarly simply.
...or it could be the bearing on the drum - big(ish) job but still 1/10th of the price off a new machine... but what will next go wrong...?

Thanks all - The in line filter sounds interesting - as does the valve. Ill take a look later this week ( washing done now - dont need to take things too fast) and try to get back to you.
