In my newspaper today, Homebase had a full page advert offering discount gardening deals.
One of wheich was a grass trimmer at £27.99 for only £19.99.

When I went on-line to order it, it was £22.99.
I phoned their customer care service and the girl said it must have been a misprint, which I said that if they advertised it for £19.99 they should sell it for that, but all she said was, they are within the law for a misprint, is she right?

Yes she is. A shop can refuse to sell you any item for any reason.
In law, the ad is only an 'invitation to treat' i.e. here's something you could buy from us - it is not part of the contract of sale. Only when you offer the money to purchase the item and the vendor accepts it, is a contract in existence and the conditions of the contract come in to force. Or so my Law lecturer told me!
It's not good from a customer service point of view but it's not unlawful.
Did the advert definitely include online purchases?
It's still a bit tight of them not to honour their ad though!
