to late to learn?

i failed my driving test at age 19 and never carried on with it.  now, at nearly 40, is it too late for me to try again?  i hate driving and don't think i'll ever do it.

If you want to do it, you can, no worries. My mothers friend didn't learn to drive until her mid fifties. Now, she loves the freedom of just going where she wants, when she wants without having to arrange a lift, even if it's just up to my mums for a cuppa!
Your maturity now compared to when you were 19 should make it easier for you. You don't sound really positive though.

I was 34 when I passed my test. Nothing wrong with being an opsimath. :)

Go for it ! I must admit that it will more difficult and take longer than if you had continued at the earlier age.

Road conditions will have changed, the test itself has changed but it is certainly not unsurmountable. As has been said, the freedom it could give you will be worth it.

Find a good, local instructor on recommendation and just take your time.

Please, if you want to do it, then do it. You will never regret it. Once you have that independence you will wonder how you ever managed without it. I don't actually enjoy driving, but I appreciate the freedom it gives me so much. Besides, if I don't want to drive somewhere, I don't do it.

 

I don't think you will find it harder than someone much younger than yourself either, because even though you haven't actually experienced driving on the roads yourself (as they haven't either), you've had years of observing other people doing it and all that goes into your head, no matter what.

If you hate driving and don't think that you'll ever do it, then why bother?  Give up now and save the money!

All the above answers are worth considering.  I trained to be a driving instructor at the age of 50.  Admittedly I passed my test when I was 18 but if I can retrain in this sphere at 50 you certainly can at 40.....if you want to.

It's never too late but if you hate it that much then you don't have to do it.

My Mum passed her test at 42 and now drives an automatic car, she never thought about driving at all until she started learning and passed her test.

My father taught me the basics at 17 but then I didn't retun to driving until my mid-thirties when I took my test. The roads these days can be a pretty unpleasant place especially if you are not very confident but it is such a useful skill that I would recommend taking the test even if, once you pass, you choose not to own a car or drive every day. There are still some lovely and quiet parts of the country to explore with a hire car for example... 40 sounds so young to me now anyway.
