memory card sizes

Is it true that smaller capacity memory cards have been discontinued, and that they now start at 2gb ?
Surely this can't be true ? it doesn't affect me, as I use a 4gb card, but a friend has a Ricoh Caplio R4
and her only card is a 64mb. I suggested she buy a bigger one and I think the biggest one the Ricoh will take is a 1gb, which she is now told she can't buy. What about all the people with older model cameras,
they're quite happy with ? Anyone been down this road, and what did they do. ? Any information gratefully received. Thanks.

Thanks Chuck, for your prompt reply. I'll pass it on, but she doesn't have a computer, so I suppose it falls to me. She was hoping for a shop, but since the demise of Jessops, we're all having to search around. Thanks again.

Flash memory is a massive growth market which is progressing very quickly, evidenced by the fact that memory sticks and cards that are orders of magnitude larger in capacity than those a few years ago are many times less expensive.

This is good for the consumer in that it has driven down prices, but at the same time, with the sheer number of products and variations available, is it really realistic to expect a local shop to stock all sizes of these products? If you can get a 2GB card for a tenner, then the price they'd have to sell a 512mb or 1GB version wouldn't be worth their time stocking. It's not about being awkward, it's about financial viability for a walk-in shop with overheads to consider.

Interesting. If you try a larger card (which I assume is the same physical size) does it fail altogether, or merely use that bit of memory it is expecting to find ?
