it's in great nick and she asked could I restore it to factory settings, basically, theres a PC shop near us that would take it in P/E for some games for my grandsons DS,

lol yepsky I am fine NM x
it should be alt + F10 on a acer, you need to do it just as the acer logo comes on the screen after you first turn it on.

If it doesn't work then it's possible the recovery partition has been deleted by some "well meaning" person at some point in the past, in which case you'll need a windows XP CD and install windows the old fashioned way using a CD
Question Author
thanks Chuck, it looks like that may have happened
Have a look one the start menu under all programs and see if you have anything listed at all to do with acer, if so have a look and see if there is a acer recovery manager?

Though if it's just going to a shop then I would securely wipe the hard drive and leave it blank, if they want to put an OS back on it let them do the work.

This will wipe the hard drive fully and make sure no one can get any personal details off it (simply restoring windows won't stop people getting old personal files off the drive even if they've been deleted)
