Viral illnesses deplete the good bacteria in your system, as do antibiotics because they don't differentiate while attacking bad bacteria. Probiotics reintroduce good bacteria, which are needed in the immune system to fight intruders. Probiotics are really easy to get a hold of. Either buy the wee yoghurt type drinks from the supermarket (probably best for a 3 year old) or go to the health food shop and get them in tablet form.
another thing to try is chicken soup. Sounds wierd but it contains a protein that can shorten the duration of some viral illnesses (colds and flu particularly).
The good things in pro-biotics are killed my stomach acids as soon as they hit the stomach. What you hear on the adverts is advertising speel to get you to buy the product. They don't do any good.
im with incitatus all the way on this one. Chicken noodle soup is the beloved cure all of my childhood.
