Pet Grooming

My cat desperately needs brushing but he won't let me. He's short haired but his coat is really thick & he's shedding like mad. He doesn't object to being combed, he just gets up & walks off. Any ideas on how I can persuade him to let me comb him without causing me gbh gratefully received.

does he like food? if so, then he only gets fed as he is being combed, one stroke of comb equals one bit of food. A furminator removes more hair per stroke than a normal comb so may be worth a try.

try it when he's tired and sleeping!!!

If he likes sitting/laying on your lap, start by stroking him, then gently introduce a soft brush, then go on to a cat comb. I'm sure he'll soon get used to it.

Fortunately, our Milly loves being brushed & combed.

Our cat can hear a brush coming out of the cupboard wherever she is. I get it out to brush the dog and she rushes forward to be first in line, sort of pushing herself under the brush whilst I try to brush the dog. If I put the brush down on the floor she brushes herself by rolling about all over it. She also looks completely on a high whilst you brush her, ecstatic!!

Our Milly's the same LL. When I've finished brushing/combing her, I lay the brush on the floor. She sniffs around it, then rolls over & paws it like a toy (or a mouse)!

Harvey Pickle Pants loves a good brush.. and like to try and hold the brush.. he 'late' brother Saff Bag used to drool too - he LOVED being brushed!!

Ah, you must really miss that helen - I did when we lost our Smudge after 13 years.

Milly hasn't replaced her, but gives us so much pleasure. She's actually a Mummy's girl & follows me everywhere.

When I got Max, a hairy GSD the breeder advised that I start off just making him stand while I stroked him, them use a grooming glove and eventually a grooming rake. Now I carry his rake when ever we go for a walk and as soon as he see's me with it in my hand he runs up and stands ready for grooming, mind you it might be because he knows he always ges a biccy afterwards

Thanks to all for the help & stories. Smoke only rolls around the floor when he's doing his pole-dancer impression with his scratching pole. I've tried a mitt, he just attacked it. He won't sit on anyone's lap, so thats out so I'll try the food thing - he's a greedy little perisher. What's a furminator?

I use a grooming glove, with a rubber brushy thing on the palm and gently stroke the cat, can't get to all the places but it'll do!
