I was thinking of taking a week or so and walking The west Highland Way. Are there many gnats about this time of year?

I've been in August and if we went within a mile of a pond we were infested!
They are not called gnats but midges, there will be hordes of them and they eat you. Plenty of repellent is required.
Aren't there more about end of July and August? I've never been bothered in June.
I live in Gairloch Wester Ross and the midges surfaced this week. You can expect, certainly up here, midges to eat you from the end of May until early September. If you don't want to use smelly midge repellant try Avon Skin so Soft, I am told it is quite effective in fighting off the little bu**ers.
