pregnat with chest and upper back pain
7 Answers
Hi, I'm 14 weeks pregnant and today at work I developed really uncomfortable pain in my back (upper), across my shoulders and my chest/ribs. I feel stiff and achy and it hurts when I breathe deeply, laugh or cry. I don't think I've sat or slept in an odd position and it seemed to come on throughout the day and to get worse. My blood pressure is fine, I'm not struggling for breath and I don't have any other symptoms of illness. It might not be pregnancy related at all but I vaguely remember a period of painful muscles in my first pregnancy - which I did put down to sleeping uncomfortably and so wondered if I may have been wrong then and if it IS to do with body changes/ pregnancy hormones etc. after all.
Has anyone else experienced similar and any ideas what could be the cause?
Thanks in advance.

This might sound a bit of an odd question but have your boobs got bigger? i suffer from a bad back, and it all started when i went up a couple for bra sizes. The best thing for it is to do some back streaches, maybe talk to your mid wife about some suitable ones. To help get rid of the pain you can roll up a towel and lay across it, also try sleeping without a pillow and make sure your bra is giving you enough surport
Musculo-skeletal pains are common in pregnancy due partially to postural change ( a bit early for you)and hormonal change.Take Ibuprofen for the pain on an occasional basis.
An ectopic pregnancy in your case is a "rank outsider" as the pain of an ectopic pregnancy is a very specific "tip of the shoulder pain" which you are not experiencing.
Don't worry.
