Why do those little bobble things appear on your clothes? What causes them, and how do you prevent them and make them go away from clothes that have them already?

Cue "Does anyone remember the Remington Fuzz-Away" or whatever it was called. My niece used it on her soft toys when they went bobbly!
It's 'coming out of the closet' time RCP, and proudly admitting to owning one!! Just a quick shave - and the bobbles have gone! I couldn't live without it as the men in my family make it their life's work to spawn them. Cotton garments are fine, but it seems to affect the wool/acrylic fabrics the most, probably caused by friction - or something like that.
It is indeed the rubbing action of the clothes against themselves that causes this, the worst culprit being your washing machine.....prevention is impossible and they only way to get rid of them is the method decribed before.
Do the bobbles in fact, come from the belly button?
