You can't help sometimes getting a flash of light if you look at the sun by mistake but any staring at it with eyes open is not recommended!

There's really not much point in gazing at the Sun longer than it takes to say, "Yup, there it is . . . that's the Sun." There are alternatives to looking directly at the Sun which are much more informative and interesting. Besides, it's not nice to stare.
