Something of Shakespere, if you count as book rather than play, must be quite popular too. I'v seen 3 versions of Macbeth while studying it at school, and Throne of Blood is mant to be based on it. Havn't watched it mind, they all speak strange language and are in black and white.
Are we just talking English-language films? IMDB cannot help you there, and films such as Wide Sargasso Sea are based upon the events of a book, whil not being a... I cant remember the word (I'll make one up) filmterpretation of the actual book.
I will hav a look through the old film magazines. This was a question a while back in some Q&A and you've got me wondering. I'm desperate for a old new bit of trivia.
Mind you, the TV movies does throw it a bit, as dothawkes points out. Have you seen th informercials about the TimeLife bible films? Apparently they are making one for each biblical story. They look rubbish and star folks such as Liz Hurley. Worse, I know someone buying them all, but she's mad, so it's ok.
