The average American is probably vaguely aware that the World Cup is starting sometime soon, and that the US team is playing some time this weekend (most could probably not name the opponent). I would venture to say there are far more Mexican flags than US flags being flown in the US, in honor of the World Cup (not making any sort of political statement there, just an observation). This is probably because there are approximately zero US flags being flown in honor of the World Cup.

dr b, the world cup matches are being shown live in the US for the first time ever during this tournament. The American interest in football (soccer) has soared recently according to my American friends.

you seemed like you were camouflaging your derision and negativity towards England fans by asking if any other fans are flying flags on cars and in windows, as though you somehow think it is an English flaw not a patriotic gesture to support the teams.

"Soared" from a very low base! I think if you added up all the expats/immigrants in the US rooting for their home countries you'd easily top the number of *serious* US fans (as opposed to bandwagon-jumpers who will get excited if we make the round of 16, but then not care again till 2014).

I'm in St Louis Missouri, which actually has something of a reputation as a "hotbed" of US soccer. But I'm just not seeing much World Cup fever here.
