Geographically they are Oceania but I doubt the commentator was giving a geography lesson.

It's because Australia is a single country, therefore it was grouped with Asian teams for the qualification process to get to the world cup.

Israel is part of Europe for the Eurovision Song Contest too.

The reason Australia are grouped with the Asian association is it was felt that with the rise of so many decent Australian footballers that basicaly in the Oceania group they had a walk over and this stopped the other countries from having a chance to get to the World Cup.

The reason that Israel is grouped with Europe in these things is the other countries in thier part of the world won't play with them.
