This morning at got a phone call from a lady whom i work with, she was up-set and panicking because her female cat of 13 years had a open wound on her right back leg, she asked me for phone number for our local vets who came out to the surgery. I took her down as she is a windower and had no-one else to ask. I was shocked to see the size of the hole in this poor cats leg but it didn't seem to be bothering her, ( the cat that is ) the vet reckons that it was an abcess which hadn't burst but got infected and eaten away at this poor cats flesh.  We left her there as he was going to have to clean the wound and sew up the hole. This is new to me where abcesses are concerned I thought they always burst, has anyone on AB has had the same thing happen to their pet, I am waiting for her to call me when the vet has finished so we can go and pick her up, the vet bill will anything up to 100,  I will keep you informed of the cats progress :-)

God, how horrible, I always assumed that an abcess would burst as well.
I'm thinking of your neighbour and her poor wee cat. Please keep us informed x x
Hi catwoman, poor wee thing. It almost sounds more like an ulcer.I had never heard of an abcess doing that either. Its as well you were able to help.Hope it improves soon, and tell your friend we're thinking of her and her wee cat.

Hi mycatis and lindpinda, my friend called me just after 6 to and pick up Minna her cat, the surgery went well, the poor cat has a 4 inch wound after he had cut away the dead flesh and about 10 to 15 stitches and and a tube for drainage, he has told her to bathe the wound twice a day with salt water, and he has given her 10 days supply of anti-biotics, I will be taking her back some time in the week for a check up to see how its healing, and she will have to go back in 10 days to have the stitches out, I did feel sorry for her she was crying because of the age of her cat and glad that she survived the opperation. I will tell her that you are thinking of her and Minna when I get to work in the morning.  :-)

P.S. The vet bill came to 121:66, an expensive sunday afternoon for her, but she isn't worried about the cost, she is a passionate animal lover and this cat is her sole companion.  :-)

Well that's the thing catwoman, they are our babies,or maybe more like 2yr olds! I have a book written back in the 30s,all about the various cats the author had had,and his favourite was called, minna minna mowbray, but minna for short! I'm sure she,ll be fine, and and come home to be spoilt rotten!

Hi lindapinda, No doubt Hilary will spoil Minna, she be getting her favourite treat of Sardines in Tomato Sauce! and lots and lots of TLC.  :-)
Its so funny catwoman,my two wouldn't touch sardines or salmon, but the wee man loves tuna(would shamefully do anything to get it)and yasmin would kill for prawns! You sorta think all cats would love all fish, but thats their independent spirit of course that we adore!

I add this for the comfort of your friend.

This unburst abcess thing happened to a friend of mines dog some time ago, on her back just over her hind legs. They noticed the bulge and thought it was a tumour on her spine, took her to the vets who had to operate that day....dog had never shown any sign of pain or distress either and made a complete recovery.

Hi woofgang, thank you for your information about your friends dog, I will tell my friend as she is feeling quilty that she she should have noticed this condition sooner, she feels like she had neglected her cats health in some way, I know this isn't the case as she is such a caring person and she hates to hear or see any cruelty to any animal, she is at present feeding a stray cat which comes to her house but wont let her too close, she has asked around her neighbourhood about this cat but no- one knows anything about it. :-)

Hi mycatis and lindapinda I have given your best wishes to day at work, she said thank so much, we are taking Minna to the vets tomorrow night for a check-up to see how her scar is healing, Minna slept most of the night yesturday and she was o.k. this morning when she left her.  :-)

Good to hear all's going well! Was thinking about wee minna today, while trying to keep my two happy! Not a easy task, with two very demanding babies!

We ahd a hamster that had some kind of absess/growth, on her side, we thought that one of the cats had managed to get a little too close to her, but when it didn't heal (only got worse and bigger/more open) we took it to the vets and they said that it was a growth that need to be removed, it was eating her from the inside, not nice.

But it didn't bother her in the slightest, but best to get it sorted, doesn't matter how much, they are worth it.

It cost us about 50, but not the point, it gave her another few months with us, before she died in June, but that was old age. Hope that helps?
