I'm interested in building/starting up a website but I'm not sure how to go about it really. What are the rules and regulations and all the whys and what ifs? I've got a specific topic in mind, I just need a pointer in the right direction. Any advice much appreciated!

try checking out the Worldwide web consortium (W3C) at
http://www.w3.org/ . It is a good place to check industry standards and what techniques are currently being encouraged/frowned upon etc

The main rules and regulations are dictated by HTML (HyperText Markup Language) the basic building block of the Web. It all depends on what you want to do, but a good starting place is to try looking at something such as WebMonkey or similar; they have tutorials for beginners.

In addition to this, you need to have webspace where you can 'host' your site and a piece of software that allows you to move your files from your home PC to the Internet, called an FTP program (File Transfer Protocol).

The trick is that there is no trick - HTML is not magic and it's not very hard to get to a point where you can develop a small site. The best thing you can do is get your hands dirty and try writing one. The very worst that can happen is it won't work, and then you just need to fix it!

I suggest you go into W H Smiths and buy a web design magazine, something like "Web Design Made Easy" (not sure if that is the right name).

In simple terms it is a 4 step process.

1) Register your domain name - www hellothere com -for example.

2) Find an ISP (Internet Service Provider) to host it

3) Design the web site on your PC with a web design tool (FrontPage for example)

4) Finally, upload the web site from your PC to the ISP site.

Items 1 and 2 can both be done by the ISP. I use netcetra (http://www.netcetera.co.uk/) but there are loads of others.

Items 1 and 2 can both be done online and are fairly easy.

Item 3 is more difficult, designing the site.

Item 4 is fairly easy, once you have done it for the first time.

Good luck

Not wanting to put you off but building a website can be very easy but also very difficult, try and think of it like prinitng a news letter for the local church and producing a copy of The Times.

While they essentially use the same delivery methods, print on paper the way they are constructed and produced are worlds apart.
