I have been given a nice Stuart crystal vase that has got some water marks on the inside that spoils the look of it, I have tried sterident and that did no good at all, may be I should have used it hot, but was afraid of cracking the vase, is there someone out there who can tell me what to do please.

Have you tried Vinegar????
My wife suggests the following:
Barkeepers Friend. It's a powder that you sprinkle on a wet cloth. It says on the label: "China and Glass. removes stains caused by tea, coffee, etc. Approved by Wedgwood."
Bicarbonate of soda. 1 teaspoon to a quarter pint of warm water. Let it stand in the vase for about 10 mins. then wrap a teatowel around the handle of a wooden spoon, push the cloth into the vase and rub it around.
Best of luck.
My wife (bless her!) has dug a booklet ("How To Clean Everything About The House", by Olive E. Ivory, presented with Home Chat) out of her library, and it contains the following:
Glass Decanters. A solution of 1 tablespoonful salt to a quarter pint vinegar left in the decanter for an hour or two will remove discoloration.
The booklet was published in approx. 1960.
dishwasher tablet in some warm water and then leave in vase for 24 hours best of luck
Some people suggest a denture cleansing tablet in water, leave it to steep overnight.
Cecil - I always use Milton baby sterilising solution for glasses, vases, thermos flasks etc. It has always worked for me and leaves surfaces unmarked, unscratched and odour-free. Thoroughly recommend you try it.
if the marks are limescale then vinegar will work but needs to be a strong solution,, citric acid works well too you can get it from a chemist, but when I lived in a hard water area I used limescale removing toilet cleaner harpic type stuff and rinsed well much quicker
