I read somewhere about a church that is/was perched on a cliff precipice a few hundred years ago that acted as a lighthouse, burning a fire from its specially built tower so the ships at sea could steer clear of the rocks.
Does anyone know of this and where it is?

Probably not the one you read about, but Blakeney Church has two towers, one of which carries a light for mariners to navigate the narrow creek (or it did thirty years ago when I lived in the area).

Could it be Ilfracombe ?

Could be the Dover one from many years back but I've not heard of that, could also be Beachy Head - all lighthouses had to be fire beacons before they invented gas and electric lamps!
