Dh bought me a punnet of essentials strawberries from Waitrose that were good or the very expensive giant ones from the US that Marks have can be good, not always, apart from that yup, strawberries aren't as good as they used to be. Tomatoes went through the same thing and are now recovering.
Poodi IMO the english ones (most of) are carp too
Had some english elsanta strawbs from asda, they were good
Try Co ops, they from Scotland and are lovely :-)
I have a few strawberry plants in pots, in my garden, the fruit is lovely and sweet and juicy, maybe you could get someone to plant a few pots up for you, ready for next season, they're easy to look after, and are at their best when just picked!....................

thanks for answers. found elsanta tasteless and live in flat so cannot grow/
funnily enough we were saying the exact opposite today, every strawberry i've eaten has been sugar-sweet this year, mind you I've only had a bout half a dozen punnets from the supermarkets (Morrisons or asda) . Ones I grow, big ones called 'fillbasket' is an old variety, and later on the small sweet what I call jamming strawbs are called 'gardener's delight' are lovely and sweet with a real strawberry taste
most commercial growers grow Elsanta, quite flavourless but will stay in good shape for a few days once picked.
I've just had some Scottish Elsantas from Sainsbury's - not a strong taste, but not bland either; quite sweet.
Kentish strawberries are on sale in Tesco - they are growing them now in the huge area dedicated to food production in Thanet. They are lovely, and no food miles.
I protested very strongly to Tesco last year, local farmers were having to throw away their lovely Victoria plums because the store wouldn't pay a decent price for them - instead they brought in those bullet-hard purple plums from Spain. I bought no plums from Tesco last year on principle.
I've found the Tescos "Brittish" Elsanta to be fairly sour and plain. However, the Elsanta from my garden are as sweet as can be.
Bought a punnet from Tesco's yesterday (Kent) got a free tub of cream with 'em. Forgot about them soo today its strawberry's and cream while watching Wimbledon.
I bet my S&C will be a lot cheaper than their S&C. = £4.50 per dish containing 5 strawberries and a blob. (a friend told me)

jem.
we usually get ours from Waitrose and, whilst they have been a little flavourless up until now, they are now wonderful and we can't get enough of them. Got another punnet for tonight's dessert.
ya its correct once i tasted strawberry its sour to taste ..
