I can't say I've ever noticed that, the prevalent smells round here are privet, my climbing rose, and yucca (now that does stink, sickly sweet, really bad for hay fever!).
There's a tree on the way to the cafe I go to for lunch that is distinctly whiffey of this.

Your privet, Boxy? ... Is that an outside toilet?

China ... it's really distinctive, isn't it !
I will have to go find a conker tree, and sniff..... (purely in the interests of research, you understand).
