How can I get a visa for China?

I assume you write to the Chinese Embassy in London.

Assuming it's a tourist visa - you could take an organised tour, in which case your travel agent should be able to deal with it for you.

As sddsdean pointed out you can get it through the Embassy in London, look it up in the yellow pages online or you can try their website, just type in chinese embassy london into a reliable search engine. Their information is slightly out of date on the website but only on a few minor details, they'll ask you for an itinerary with your application, but you don't worry about, no one keeps tabs on you when you get there (although they insist on seeing your passport when you book into hotels and getting your details). Watch the charges, the visa doesn't cost that much but even though I had someone pick it up from the Embassy to avoid the extra for posting, they charged extra when he got there anyway. China is an absolutely beautiful country, I hope you have a really good time.

I don't know if you're holiday is still hypothetical or if someone's given you some advice already but 1. Practice squatting, 2. Always carry some paper hankerchiefs, 3. the Lonely Planet do a lovely phrase book which my sister and I found invaluable, 4. Lonely Planet are the best guide to accommodation while the Rough Guide is the best for places to go and things to see

The easiest cheapest place to get it is in Hong Kong.It takes one day and costs HK$160 for a single entry visa good for up to 3 months.(that's about 13 pounds). A lot of travel agents can do it for you, or the official visa office or CTS. If you're travelling to other countries in the region then Bangkok is great for visas (Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar etc.) If you can travel via Hong Kong or Bangkok then don't worry about visas until you get over here. It's really easy to sort out when you arrive.

can I just add to Frogqueene that my experinece was that the only time you really do need to worry about the itinirery is if you want to visit Tibet.
