What book?

I leave for a 2 week holiday in the sun in a fortnight and would very much like to hear of recommendations for a book/s that you simply couldn't put down!? Author, title and why please?! Thanks very much.

Any of Dicken, Thackeray Trollope or Austen.

Jane Austen, so full of sex that I can hardly put it down !

The last book I read that I couldn't put down was:        Sue Townsend -  The Queen and I - It's a laugh out loud, can't put down kind of book.                           And I can also recommend a book by Faye Weldon but the name escapes me. I will post the title when I remember (mind you anything written by Faye Weldon is worth reading)

Carter beats the Devil by Glen David Gold, historical/thriller/fantasy about a magician and a US president; really imaginative and totally different. About 5 years old, I think, available in paperback.

Not quite sure how it compares in sexiness to Jane Austen though.

Dan Brown Books especially the Da Vinci Code...Whether you are religious or not it makes you think, its the best book ive read in ages.

Memoirs of a Geisha by A. Golden...a great summer story about what what happened behind closed doors (and probably still does). You dont have to be interested in Japanese culture or anything but if you are then you must read it!

Shantaram � because it�s an amazing true story and a complete emotional rollercoaster. It�s the only book that�s ever made me laugh out loud and sob my heart out! (ok � im a wuss!) its one of those books where you start reading it really slow towards the end because you just don�t want it to finish!

Peter Moore � great for armchair travellers. He�s a crazy guy who seems to act first then think later, gets himself in loads of situation which I love reading about but would never be stupid enough to get into myself!

Will Randall � again, seems to get himself into funny situations. Really light hearted fun read.

Hello Scullywoo.
My first recommendation is The Nanny Diaries by Emma Maclaughlin and Nicola Kraus.This is a book about (as the title would suggest) Nannies,well one in particular and it's the kind of read ideal for summer holidays, not to deep, but extremely funny and well worth getting.

The second book would be The Woman in Black by Susan Hill. I have just read this and really enjoyed it,but i suppose it all depends on the kind of books/authors you like.

Any (or indeed all!) of the Precious Ramotswe books, by Alexander McCall Smith, starting with the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency.

Because the characters are wonderful and you really care what happens to them and the writing is gentle and funny and thoughtful.

And, if you are going to take up the Da Vinci Code suggestion, then also try Deception Point by the same author.  I enjoyed it much more.

All the above book are really good reads - All three authors make me laugh out loud (usually in public) and the stories are excellent. Must say also that you can never go wrong with a Rankin or Bryson

I wouls say the "Shopaholic" series by Sophie Kinsella - obviously this will be based on my views as a female but is so funny and true - you wouldn't believe.  She replies to her bank managers letters about being overdrawn by calling him pet lovey names and describing in great details the benefits of having the new Prada / Gucci / Chanel Bag / Shoes etc she has just bought which also justifies why she is over her overdraft but if they would extend it by X amount she could also buy the matching purse - etc.  Believe me this is one of the fuuniest books I have read and I read A LOT

I took "The five people you meet in heaven" Mitch Someone. Very moving and thought provoking. Synopsis - Who have you met in your life and how did their interaction with you influence both your lives?
Also enjoyed The Rule of Four - billed as the Da Vinci Code for people with brains!
