The naturally occurring theobromine found in chocolate, cocoa beans, cocoa bean hulls, cola, and tea, is responsible for the poisoning effect in dogs. Dogs are unable to metabolize this element quickly enough to prevent poisoning. The lethal dose of this agent is determined by weight and falls roughly into the category of 250-500 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. This equates to approximately 2/3 to 1 1/3 oz bakers chocolate for every 2.2 pounds though signs of poisoning begin to appear at a much lower ingestion levels.

My dogs never get any processed dog food, the stuff they put in that isn't fit for any dog!! My dogs only eat raw human grade meat, bones and fish. They no longer have allergies, wind or foul smelling giant poo's and are the peak of good health. (Be aware its not quite that simple) a lot of research needs to done to get a balanced diet and to meet their digestive needs.
The greatest thing to see is the enthusiasm on their faces when the see the food :-) and guess what, it works out cheaper!!! just not so convenient.

We used to have a veggie dog Ratter. He adored all veg and turned his nose up at meat. He was a large dog and nearly 14 when he died, so obviously his veggie diet suited him. He used to beg for whole brussell sprouts!
I often feed my dog rice and fish. She's quite a nervous dog and prone to colitis and fish and rice sorts her out. In all the years we have had dogs we have never had one die young, in fact they have all reached a great age, so we must be doing something right!!
(We eat loads of fish ourselves too! We have glossy hair and nice wet noses!! ;o) )
