Nicest beach in Devon or Cornwall

I was reading a 'Home' magazine the other day and someone had renovated a house overlooking a beach in Devon or Cornwall. It looked foreign, in as much as the sea was so clear and it just looked like it belonged abroad. I know several beaches have Blue Flag status now, but in your opinion what is the nicest beach in Cornwall or Devon. I might even take the family there if its that good!

Years ago, we stayed at Hayle in Cornwall a few times & loved the beach. There are stretches of golden sand with rocky areas for little ones wanting to 'catch things'.

Know Hayle very well Smudge.  I stay in Carbis Bay most years as my best friend lives there.  The only problem I have with the West Country is the amount of traffic all summer long.  We get so little in our part of the world, it comes as a shock to find nose to tail traffic and full car parks everywhere.  It certainly puts me off the idea of a holiday in the West Country (I don't count my Carbis Bay visits as holidays!).

Sorry Vinny, you have a beautiful county and I am sure you know some really quiet spots without traffic!!! but to me it is awful in the summer.

Yes I have to agree FP ...but with are mild climate...people come anytime of the year...This part of the westcountry..has been officially named as the second warmest place in Britain all year round!! so bring your buckets and spades and get on that donkey now!!

The last time we visited Hayle was in 1976! We had an orange Volkswagen Beetle then & there wasn't that much traffic around in those days.

I still think Devon, Cornwall & Dorset are the best English places for a holiday - apart from the traffic! We also love Weymouth & Osmington.

I am sure it is lovely Vinny.  But don't forget that North Norfolk officially  has the highest sunshine rate of the UK, is the dryest and the record for longlivety (spelling?)!!   We also have hot summers (just keep looking at our weather map), but I have to admit we don't have warm winters - but the lack of rain makes up for the cold.

Here endeth my Advertising Campaign to come to sunny North Norfolk (when in fact I like it best when the tourists go home).  Unfortunately, we have been 'discovered' over the last 10 years or so by the upwardly mobile brigade and now can boast one of our resorts (Burnham Market) and being known as the Chelsea of Norfolk!

Hope you and your family are having a lovely summer.  I spent yesterday on the coast with a friend and it was great.  Back to good old housework and window cleaning today.

Not too bad today thank you FP. I have my hair in a turban as I've just washed it - no doubt I'll look like Worzel Gummage by the time I get off this chair!

We've only ever stayed in Winterton, Norfolk, a couple of times & although it & the surrounding areas were very nice, we do prefer the West Country. Maybe we'll give it another go in the near future though!

Try North Norfolk - Coastline between Hunstanton and Cromer is amazing.  North Norfolk is completely different in character, scenery etc. than South Norfolk and we have pretty carstone and red brick and flint cottages.

We have rolling countryside, and most of the coastline is protected.  After all, the Queen's favourite home is only just up the road at Sandringham!

Go on, give it a try and you can call in for a cuppa!

Looks really nice FP...I Might have to join Smudge...and bring up some devon cream ...You will get here quicker on a donkey...the way the caravans are pouring in at the moment...(:)I must stop advertising n.devon...could all this traffic be my fault?( :- )

It's so hard to choose for me, I am such a fan of Cornwall and parts of Devon.   There's a problem with traffic and overcrowding in the school hols. but if you could go in late May or early June.... or early September.  The sea takes on a very blue clearness at those times of the year.  There's St. Ives with THREE very different types of  beaches.  What about Marazion, opposite St. Michael's Mount.  Padstow/Rock. Some tiny coves.  Some wide breathtaking places.  They are all lovely.  St. Ives remains my personal favourite,but it is impossibly crowded at certain times.

i practically live in cornwall and we always end up going to the same beach every time it is called seaton and i love it is is very big and has a beach cafe just next to it and a icecream parlor the cost of the car park is cheep as well...   also there is another beach in cornwall named looe it is georgeous that has all the same priorities as seaton but at looe it is nicer sand kk...
