However, having been a teacher, parents attitudes to their teenage children have long ceased to surprise me. One of of our 14-year-old pupils left home one Thursday morning but failed to turn up for school and then failed to arrive home. As you might expect, his parents phoned the police to report him missing. When did they do so? On the following Tuesday!

It was only lack of finance, rather than of parental consent, which prevented me and my friends from regularly consuming large amounts of alcohol back in the 1960s. Perhaps access to money might be one of the big differences now?
Further, back in the 1970s, one of the 14-year-old girls in my class had an abortion in the same week that her 15-year-old sister had her second abortion. (It was generally assumed, but unproven, that their older brother was responsible for all of the pregnancies). I'm not condoning under-age drinking or under-age sex but simply stating that that neither are new phenomena.
