Yet another flipping XBox 360 question

My son wants a new xbox (the ones that are out on Monday) - its part of his brithday present - and he has loads of stuff saved on his old one (map packs?, etc) in addition to his progress on the games he has played on it. Is there any way to transfer this information to a new xbox? Thanks (PS - please don't be too technical if you can provide an answer!!)

my son has a removable hard drive on his that fits behind a grey panel on the bottom, does he not have that?

You/He does realise that the only real difference between the old Xbox and the new ones are as follows....

New one has larger hard drive (if the drive in the current one is large enough for what he wants no reason to get a new xbox)

New one has built in wireless (if you need it I'd assume you already have the wireless adaptor for the old one, so again no real reason to get a new one)

New one comes with the Kinect controller, but that will be available separately later this year for use on the old xbox.

In all other ways the new xbox is more a cosmetic update to the box, it's hardware specs are identical so buying a new one seems a bit of a waste of money to me, you are not getting anything better really, you'll pretty much just be buying the same thing a second time.

Hi Chuck - apparently his old one is scratching his discs and generally being a bit crap (is he telling porkies?) - it's about 3 years old. My husband agrees that he needs a new one so I am taking it that the old one is on it's last legs. He does want a Kinect thing for Christmas - if he gets a new xbox now will we be able to buy some sort of gizmo that will enable him to use the Kinect thing on it? Thanks.

OK, some of the older ones are known to scratch disks, normally if the console is moved or subject to vibrations when in use. It's a known fault with them and will be interesting to see if it's been fixed in the new one (especially as Microsoft have always claimed the problem doesn't exist!)

And the Kinect is meant to work on all models, old or new.

If you have all the parts and the box for your old console (even without box) you could trade this console at your local gaming shop or HMV and get money off the newer version - that will save you a few pounds. They will test it but as long as it plays games which I am assuming it does you will get some money for it.

Hi Greedfly - we were thinking of trading it but we need to sort out storing the old data first (which i have now got the info for ^) - have also got a really, really old one under a bed somewhere too - don't expect anyone will want that though.

Is always worth a try. Where I used to work we would accept pretty much anything as long as it worked and had the relevant things to alongside. =)

I'll suggest it to my husband - he's going to sort it all out. (Wasn't sure if my son was swinging the lead about his not working as his younger brother had a swankier version for Christmas).

If the system works it might be worth buying a new lead which will cost a few pounds at most. Just pop into your local stores and see which consoles they accept and what models and roughly how much they will give you. That way you will know if it's worth your while =)
