Orange Marches in England
46 Answers
There were a few posts recently regarding the July marching season in Northern Ireland and the resulting riots.
Does anyone know if Orange Lodge marches still take place in England and Scotland?
I remember them in Liverpool as a kid in the 60s and 70s and I think they also marched in Glasgow.
Does this still happen? And if so, is there any trouble?
I seem to recall a bit of aggro at the marches I remember.

I recently read that there are more orange walks in Scotland than there are in Ireland. I think most of them are probably in the west, but any Saturday between May and September you can almost guarantee there'll be one going on somewhere, with lots of drinking and fighting to go with it. I remember our town was decimated by one in the late 80s, I worked in a supermarket at the time and the staff had to be locked in for our safety and no buses or taxis would come near. It's part of our national disgrace and all connected to the old firm bigotry that goes on up here. There was also a young mum stabbed to death in the street, with a sword, after a junior orange walk just a few weeks ago in the outskirts of Glasgow.
Thanks Karen - Blimey!
I've been to Glasgow a few times on business and last year was going over to Celtic Football Club from the airport.
I know taxi drivers are a breed apart but let's just say my chap made it very clear which 'foot he kicked with' (is that the expression?) and what he thought of the other side!
All very entrenched isn't it?
Don't recall it being quite so heavy in Liverpool.
