24 Across. Pal, shy when drunk? (4). I have t-s-. 'Toss' fits and suits (shy=toss/throw), bu I can't see link with 'pal' or 'drunk'. Any views?

Thanks - 'tosh' was another thought I had, and could justify it being the answer, but I wasn't mad keen or certain!

Have now established that 'tosh' IS another word for pal/chum so have settled on that as answer (tosh= toss spoken by a drunk)

Tosh is a slang word for friend, just like 'pal'.

You are right that toss means shy in the sense of throw, but try pronouncing it like you're drunk... ;-)
