floppy disks...do they have any use any more?

Only for very old machines which have neither USB ports nor a CD writer...

I copied all of mine to CD years ago, formatted them and recycled them. I haven't had a PC with a floppy drive since then, though I keep a USB floppy drive for the odd occasion where a client sends me one...

I have a great deal of genealogical records on 3.5" floppy discs. I am aware I could transfer it all onto my current PC and I do when I look at a particular disc. I see no reason to transfer it just for the sake of it however. I use a USB floopy disc reader to read them. I will still retain the floppy as a back up.

Fair enough, but please bear in mind that floppy disks do deteriorate over time, especially inferior quality ones...

I have come across many Floppy discs that are now unreadable and information lost, be careful!!

I also only used flash drives/memory sticks to transfer information never as a means of storage, these can also be easily damaged or lost.

we use them on machinery at work to transfer programs. Not the best of formats but we are cabling them all soon instead.

they are great for putting under the legs of wonky tables to level them up.....

Other than that can't really think of any decent uses for them these days

I was asked to install a program from floppy yesterday! 3 readers later (I always carry one and managed to find 2 more on site) I gave up. Actually quite happy it didn't work as I'm pretty sure it was single user anyway and was already installed on one PC.

Im embarrassed to say that where i work we still use them when we have to Re-Ghost users machines. This is mainly due to restrictions placed on the machines and the CD Drives having been disabled. That said though , they do still work ok for us!

i never use them....havent in must be about 8 years ...i have an old plug in one...i guess i'll keep a few disks just in case...because my mums laptop has a floppy drive

LeMarchand - Oh the machines arent old at all and dont have floppy drives on them! We just use floppy discs when we have to re-ghost a Pc's image. The Floppy just pulls the correct image etc from our main servers, its crude, but works (and has done for years!) very well! I cant see us changing that process just yet!

I see, I normally PXE boot into Ghost; apart from one site where the server crashed and I couldn't find the Ghost license key for the rebuild, so I have to boot off a USB key or the CD drive.
