i have a friend who has been charged with abh , he is 17 and has no other offences of this kind. him and a few friends were messing about as 17 year old boys do and it went wrong and one of the boys hair lit and well he got a few burns , but the family only pressed charges on the one boy. so if this is his first offence would he be let off lightly or would he be looking at some time inside ?

It depends on the severity of the burns and any other injuries, who actually set fire to him and why. ABH can carry a custodial sentence depending on the circumstances.
he needs to get a legal rep asap
"but the family only pressed charges on the one boy."

the family wont have pressed charges. the police will have fully investigated and would spoken to CPS and made decisions on who to charge with the offence

he has a legal rep ect ,,, would anyone know roughly what the charges would be , the burns were 3rd degree burns .
Question Author
and there was no reson for him to set fire to the other boy it was purely an accident. and the police know that too.
The 'starting point' sentence, for an ADULT first-time offender convicted after a trial for the lower level types of ABH is a 'high level' community order, with the sentencing range going from a 'medium level' community order up to 6 months imprisonment.

Pleading guilty will see sentencing pushed to a lower level, so a prison sentence is EXTREMELY unlikely Additionally , the fact that your friend is a minor means that the rules applied by the Youth Justice Board will apply. So your friend will almost definitely be given a Referral Order:

when your friend turns up to court, he must wear a suit and look like he's completely and utterly remorseful for what he's done (as i hope he is)
a lot has to be said about someone who makes an effort to look smart in the court room
If he gets a referral order , he should consider himself lucky, he sounds a bit of a thug to me , setting someone on fire indeed , or he may just be a brainless moron.
Question Author
it was a complete accident as i said.
Question Author
this stuff sometimes does happen unfortunatly
Yeah, OK .
if he has legal representation, surely it would be better to ask them?
Question Author
my friend dose have legal representation and what he said is mostly what ive been told , but the hearing has been postponed twice now , so hes been very worried that its gonna be a big sentence. where as im very sure its just they have a more important case.
