It would help (as ever) if you said at least what version of windows you are using.

if you have windows XP then it doesn't include any support for burning DVD's and you need to install third party software to let you burn to DVD.

This is free

Note, copying an AVI file to a DVD will not mean it is playable in all standard DVD players.

Sorry chuckfickens, it's win. XP - every time I ask a question I forget to put this info in,
you would think I would have learnt by now, anyhow how do I get it to play on a bog standard DVD player then?
It's not a straightforward process and there are loads of different bits of software that will do it, some easier to use than others (and a general rule of thumb, the paid for options are easier to use than the free ones also the free ones are often a 2 step process, needing one bit of software to convert the film to the correct format and then another bit to actually burn it)

have a read here..

I personally use Nero when I have to do it, but that is paid for software.

As ever chuckfickens, A big thank you for explaining.

Some home players (divx/jpg) will play an avi. if it basically meets divx spec. In this case, they play the file as data .. on a data disc.
All other instances need a conversion from the avi to dvd format.
This can take a while, as the whole movie needs to be re-rendered.
There's a dvd player in Lidl this week that also plays AVI format. It means you won't have to convert your movie you can just put it straight onto a disc. Also you should be able to fit approx 5 movies onto one dvd in this avi format.
There are loads that do that.
They are always the same that play jpgs, and are commonly called divx players.
Most of them use a common chipset.
Best for the money are the Philips.
